Fascinating Coastlines in Yuin Country Part 2: Mystery Bay Photo Essay
70Mystery Bay
Mystery Bay can be found some 15 kilometres south of Narooma on the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia.
Characteristic of this piece of coastline is the rock formations and in particular the bright green mossy growth on the rocks. Mystery Bay attracts many visitors, families flock to the beaches for safe swimming and rock pool adventures and fishermen for rock and spear fishing. The area is known for its abundance of abalone, however strict quotas are enforced.
A camping ground skirts this piece of beautiful coastline and campers can set up camp with outlooks over the bay and the mysterious, treeless Montague island just off the coast line.
Mystery Bay often changes its appearance with king tides shifting sand and the lay of the land. A trip to this beautiful piece of coast never disappoints.

Montague Island is integral in Indigenous (Yuin country) dreamtime history. The island is known as Barran-guba, the eldest son of Gulaga. Gulaga is the mountain, (formally Mount Dromedary) the reclining woman, who watches over her two sons, Barran-guba and Nadjinooka, (Little Dromedary). Gulaga was an active volcano some 60 million years ago and the area surrounding the mountain is lush and fertile.
Montague Island can be seen on the horizon of the next set of photos. The island is a nature reserve and is home to many bird species, including the "Little Penguin" and a seal colony. There are currently no permanent human inhabitants of the island since the island's lighthouse was automated, however the place is steeped in the history of lighthouse keepers and families. Day tours are available to the island and overnight stays in the old lighthouse residence c.1881 can be arranged. I have yet to experience the wonders of Montague Island so I will save any further information for another photo essay from the island.

Hello Annie, I finally got around to seeing this second set of beautiful photography and I am so glad I did.
The water, sand art, amazing rocks, birds, etc are all amazing. I took my time and looked through the whole slideshow and really enjoyed it. It made me happy you took the time to focus on the little details there. It made it so we could experience it also.
Bringing the beauty of all those things more close up and personal is a gift in itself! The island sounds so interesting. This is part of why I love coastlines, all the things you mention. This particular coastline area is indeed fascinating. :)
